Hi, A well balanced and non biased view and advice. Personally, I intend to stay with my DSLR (Canon 5DSr) I’ve had since 2016, as well as a older 5DmK2. Both very reliable & solid cameras. I only shoot landscapes & enjoy the challenges of the limitations of older gear. I’m 72yo, so I’m not starting out, but if I was I’de stay with Canon mirrorless & a set of 3 lenses from wide to long. Due to eye sight failure I also use an external monitor, (no flip out screen).
The main thing is to get out and capture images fun and a sense of satisfaction when you get the shot you were aiming for.
I have a full Fuifilm kit. X-H2 with plethora of primes and zooms. It’s my got to setup for my portrait sessions. As of late, I have shot a 300 plus person headshot session with my Nikon D700 and my AF-D 85 mm 1.4. I shot all the images at F8, ad the images were beautiful, the colors were rich. They had a simple softness to them that they were practicing ready SOOC. My clients were loving the photos. I absolutely forgot how much I loved shooting photos with it. And I only needed two batteries for the entire shoot. I am still actively looking for a D850 myself.
I was in the middle of transitioning over to mirrorless when my studio space got robbed and I lost everything. Thank goodness for business insurance. I effectively had a clean slate, so I sat down and said what do I have to have right now to get back in business and keep shooting the paid work I already have booked. I went full mirrorless with two matching bodies (primary and backup), with a select couple of lenses that I basically use on every job and have never looked back. That was several years ago at this point, and I’ve since rounded out my mirrorless lens collection on an as needed basis, but that primary core of two bodies and workhorse lenses is the same, and I know it inside and out. Cameras and lenses are so good these days, for the type of work I do, I’ll probably not need to purchase another body or lens before I retire (unless something breaks or it gets stolen again).
I’m a pro photographer who started in 1983. I was a photojournalist for 35 years and photographed the Raiders for 15 years. I do editorial, commercial, sports, and portrait photography. I buy everything used.
I still shoot the Nikon D5 and D4s. The big thing here is that I have a complete lens system so I am not in hurry to switch. Also, I am a photographer who does video.
That said, if I was a videographer or shooting the NFL today I would shoot mirrorless.
To me. Buying a new camera is like buying a new car as soon as you drive it off the lot it loses value.
I f you buy the latest and greatest you are paying a premium.
